Islands

Wednesday, July 07, 2010

As time goes on kitchen design has progressed to a point that we are no longer just designing for a cooking area, but for a family lifestyle. Islands have become an integral part of most kitchens today. Older kitchens usually have no island and many of us started by putting a table in the kitchen for additional work space and possibly some storage underneath. This progressed to kitchen designers adding an small island that measured 36”X36” with maybe a drawer and two doors underneath. From this small island someone thought to add a sink and so on and so forth until now we are designing islands that look like a piece of furniture. We have added length and depth to our islands so that most have a 15”-24” overhang for seating. Many islands now have a second sink for prep work and various storage options from bookshelves, to garbage bins to spice drawers, and much more. The options are only limited by one’s imagination. We are even seeing smaller tables added on for breakfast seating.

We have done thousands of kitchens with all different configurations of island layouts.
